Hui, a round-trip, station-based car share service, today announced the public launch of its service. Hui is the most innovative car share service to hit the Hawaii market, allowing members to locate, reserve, and manage payments through its mobile app. The service also utilizes Toyota’s Smart Key Box technology, which generates a digital key that allows Hui users to lock and unlock, as well as start vehicles via their smartphone.

Seventy Hui vehicles are now available for reservations by the minute or day at more than 25 easily accessible locations throughout Honolulu. Vehicles available at launch include higher-end Toyota Prius, Prius Prime and Camry XSE models, as well as Lexus RX 350 Luxury and RX F Sport vehicles. Hui vehicles are parked in marked, reserved stalls for easy pick up and drop off.
Hui has partnered with various private partners to establish accessible and convenient station locations around Honolulu including Ala Moana Center, Foodland, Hawaii Pacific University, Hawaii Pacific Health, and Ward Shopping Center. For more information on pricing, all station locations, and terms of service, please visit www.drivehui.com.

“Accessibility, convenience and reliability are key pillars of our Hui service, so we will continue to add more stations throughout Oahu with the help of our private and public mobility partners,” said Peter Fukunaga, director of Hui. “We are also open to expanding our service to Neighbor Island residents and interisland travelers as well.”

Hui’s pricing is simple: $9.95/hour or $79.95/day. Membership is free and all membership include gas, insurance, taxes, fees and 24/7 roadside assistance in the reservation cost.

“With Hui, everything can be done through the Hui app,” added Fukunaga. “From booking to drop off, our members never have to talk to anyone, unless they want to, of course.”

The launch is a significant milestone for Servco Pacific Inc. (Servco) and Toyota Connected North America, who developed the service

together as the first global pilot on Toyota’s new Mobility Services Platform. Servco sees Hui as a new mobility option for Honolulu residents and visitors who are looking for access to a vehicle without the hassle of car ownership or a traditional car rental.

“Hui is an amenity designed to complement bike share, public transportation, ride share, and other existing mobility options,” said Fukunaga.

Moving forward with pilot testing in the Honolulu area, public testers to be sought in March

Honolulu, Hawaii – January 16, 2018 – Servco Pacific Inc. (Servco) today introduced Hui, the name for its new round-trip, station-based car share program it is developing in partnership with Toyota Connected North America. Hui has just completed an employee-only pilot test with Servco employees and is now starting its next phase with a closed pilot test in Honolulu. Once the pilot test with the closed group is complete in February, Hui will open the testing to members of the public interested in trying the new mobility service.

The Hui Brand

Servco collaborated with Honolulu-based marketing agency, Anthology Marketing Group, to develop the Hui brand name and logo. With bright and vibrant colors, the Hui logo incorporates a playful nod to a vehicle wheel, while also implying continuous movement and a hui or community. The dot on the “i,” called “the orbit” symbolizes the round-trip model of  car share business.

“As most people in Hawaii already know, Hui means club, association, or joint ownership in the Hawaiian language and is often extended to imply community, partnership, or extended family,” said Kim Randall, vice president of sales & marketing for Servco. “We felt these definitions, combined with the idea of ‘better together’ made Hui a name that perfectly embodies this shared mobility service.”

Public Hui Testers to Be Sought in March

For the past few months, Hui has been conducting an employee-only pilot at Servco’s headquarters in Mapunapuna. Now, the company is progressing to the next stage with a closed group of pilot testers. Public volunteers will be sought in March to participate in the public pilot test in Honolulu.

“The introduction of Hui is another exciting chapter in Servco’s growth and Toyota’s evolution as a mobility leader. We’re excited to give members of our community an early look at our program and the ability to provide valuable feedback to help us make our service even better,” said Peter Fukunaga, director of Hui car share.

Hui stations available during the closed pilot testing will be located between Downtown and Kaimuki. Vehicles in the closed pilot program include the Toyota Prius and Camry XSE, and the Lexus RX. During the pilot, participants will use Hui vehicles at special discounted rates.

Members of the public interested in receiving Hui updates and participating in the public pilot test in March should submit their email at www.drivehui.com.

Through the Hui mobile application, users can:

  • Reserve a vehicle for use
  • Lock and unlock the vehicle
  • Obtain a digital key to start the vehicle
  • Manage payments

“It’s a fast and easy way to get a vehicle when you need one,” explained Fukunaga.

Hui car share is a new, practical shared amenity for Honolulu residents that provides an alternative to car ownership. It is designed to be a complement to bike share and public transportation options.

Servco Pacific Inc. (Servco), Hawaii’s exclusive Toyota distributor, and Toyota Connected, Toyota’s global technology strategy business, have partnered to test a new car share business and technology platform in Honolulu. The car share program is the first major business set to launch under Toyota’s global Mobility Services Platform (MSPF). When complete, the service will provide Toyota dealers and distributors with the capability to launch car-sharing programs in local markets.

“Servco and Toyota have a long and close history going back to the 50’s,” said Mark Fukunaga, chairman & CEO of Servco. “We helped test products as far back as the late 50’s Toyopet Corona prototypes and, with innovation as one of our core values, we jumped at the opportunity to pilot this new mobility platform as an operational partner with Toyota.”

Servco is currently testing the platform through an employee-only pilot in Mapunapuna. Once the employee pilot testing is complete in late 2017, Servco will launch a new Honolulu-based car share business in Kakaako with about 20 Prius vehicles located around residential buildings. The program will be round trip station-based meaning users will rent and return the vehicle at the same location. Other Toyota and Lexus vehicles, such as the Corolla, C-HR, Tacoma, and RX, are expected to be added later. A brand announcement is planned closer to the public launch.

The car-sharing platform, developed by Toyota Connected, supports fleet management, driver identification and authentication, payment management, and the ability for users to lock and unlock vehicles without physical keys. Car share users will never have to interact with a person to register, reserve and use a vehicle. Registration and background checks are handled via the mobile application. A Bluetooth connection to the vehicle will also allow users to start the vehicles via a digital key on the mobile application.

“This car sharing technology platform is designed to help consumers, distributors and dealers all benefit from locally-tailored mobility services built on a seamless and secure Toyota experience,” said Zack Hicks, chief executive officer of Toyota Connected and chief information officer at Toyota Motor North America. “This new platform demonstrates the power of combining Toyota’s unrivaled global manufacturing and technology capacity with its extensive local partners to provide consumers with more convenient options to move.”

The car share platform is the first major initiative deployed through Toyota’s global MSPF, which seeks to leverage the power of connected vehicle systems to support new mobility businesses.
